DanceSport is the term used to describe competitive Ballroom and Latin Dancing.
Unlike Medal Exams, where a student dances with their teacher and is examined individually, DanceSport competitions are where you dance together with a partner of the same level* to compete against other couples.
In the past, DanceSport was often considered to be inaccessable to the average social dancer, with hilarious scenes from "Strictly Ballroom" coming to mind. In recent years, however, DanceSport Competition has become more popular with the advent of shows such as "Dancing with the Stars" and "So You Think You Can Dance" where the general public has become familiar with the real world of DanceSport. Our very own Brendan Humphreys has featured on both of these hit shows. This has dispelled the myth that DanceSport is only for a select few and DanceSport is more accessible than ever with classes and coaches available for all ages and all levels. Now the general public is getting a more clear and accurate view of the real world of Dancing and the friendly and inclusive world of DanceSport Competition.
DanceSport is for some, a very competitive sport but for others it can be a wonderful way to participate in social dancing. People as young as 4 years, or as mature as 80 years, can enjoy this wonderful pastime.
